Uncertainty

There will always be times in all of our lives when we are surrounded by uncertainty. This is definitely one of those times. The world as we know it has changed, and some of those changes will be permanent.  What has not changed is how you can respond to what is happening. You never want to stick your head in the sand and pretend it’s not happening, but you also don’t want to absorb all the negative news without balancing it with positive solutions and positive interaction. It’s about maintaining balance.  Here are some ideas:

  1. Find solutions. Fear occurs when people do not have answers or solutions. Sometimes it’s a simple solution that is new for you. For example: I can’t leave my home to get food is reason for concern. Possible solutions are: Having food delivered by a service such as UberEats which is waving delivery fees on orders of $15 or more. There are organizations who will help with meals and delivery. It’s a great time to do some research and try something new. Ask friends and family how they are dealing with similar challenges and seek solutions.
  2. Find positive people to interact with, especially now. Seek out those who make you smile and feel good. Traditional ways to interact are not an option, so let’s try something new. Zoom is a great way to get together with friends and family. Each person is on the computer screen from the comfort and safety of their home. Zoom.us. FaceTime is another great option.
  3. Take action and bring others together for an online party. Invite 3-5 friends to get together online to stay connected. Decide up front on the topic and don’t get sidetracked with the negative news. You can each share ways you are keeping children engaged and active while they are home. You can start an online cooking club where you share new recipes each week. You can start a book club. We have lots of time on our hands, so let’s keep it positive and productive.
  4. Be compassionate. This is a time filled with uncertainty. Some are more nervous than others. Don’t judge others for how they are feeling, especially now. Be a beacon of hope and compassion for those in need. Show compassion whenever you can.
