Have you ever been so nervous or embarrassed you just wanted to disappear? I guess everyone has at some point. Especially in our youth when we were still figuring out our quirks and trying to understand what made us tick. Fear is natural, of course. It’s an unconscious protection mechanism in your brain that kicks in with that famous fight or flight response when our brain thinks we might experience physical or emotional pain. It goes into overdrive to protect us, even if there’s no real danger.
For most people, this process happens unconsciously. What we might not realize is that those brain signals are just that – signals. They are your brain’s way of making a guess about the future that may or may not be true. In most cases, there is nothing to fear. The next time you find yourself avoiding something, out of fear, remember that your brain is trying to protect you, but it might also be preventing you from experiencing something that could change your life.
Something to Think About
It may take a little practice, and definitely a conscience effort to review your feelings when you are feeling fearful and assess whether it is a real danger, or perhaps an opportunity to try something new, step out of a comfort zone, and fuel new success.
Weekly Activity
If you experience fear or anxiety over something this week, stop, breathe, and ask yourself; why am I feeling this way and is there any real danger in moving forward? If not, take a step in that direction and see where the path takes you.
Words of Wisdom
The brick walls are there for a reason. The brick walls are not there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something. Because the brick walls are there to stop the people who don’t want it badly enough. They’re there to stop the other people. – Randy Pausch
Fear makes come true that which one is afraid of. – Viktor E. Frankl
You were born a winner, a warrior, one who defied the odds by surviving the most gruesome battle of them all – the race to the egg. And now that you are a giant, why do you even doubt victory against smaller numbers and wider margins? The only walls that exist are those you have placed in your mind. And whatever obstacles you conceive, exist only because you have forgotten what you have already achieved. – Suzy Kassem
