Research shows that what you believe to be true, often is. Did you ever notice that when you expect things to fail, they often do? But when you expect to succeed, it’s more likely to happen?
Henry Ford is famous for a quote: “Whether you think you can or think you can’t you’re right.” Henry lived his life based on the principles of a book written in 1903 by James Allen called As A Man Thinketh. In his book, James said, “We ourselves are makers of ourselves”. That is a profound statement. It means that we are responsible for how we think, respond, feel, and react. It is exciting because it means that we are constantly evolving and changing, and we get to control how we evolve.
Researchers have studied these behaviors for over 100 years. Tony Robbins inspires people to walk barefoot on hot coals because they believe they can. But about 1% do not make it across without burns. Why? Because they didn’t believe they could. The best way to change your life is through action. Nothing is going to change if you aren’t willing to change yourself. It takes a lot of courage, determination, and action to change your perspective. It’s not an overnight process. It may take a little time to recondition your brain and train it to view things in the most strategic and beneficial way, but it is so worth it.
Something to Think About
You have the choice to be happy or sad, complain or express gratitude, smile or frown, be productive or procrastinate, be a victim or a victor. Just remember that you always have a choice and it begins by changing your perspective to find the positives.
Weekly Activity
Take some time this week to ask these questions:
- Is there a part of your life that you’re not happy about because you feel like you have no choice?
- If you did have a choice, what would that look like?
- What is preventing you from making that choice?
- How would your life be different if you made that choice?
Take the problem, flip it around and over and upside down to find a new perspective. It’s the key to finding choices where we once saw none.
